CoH Charity Marathon 2011: A[nother] Stupid Idea

I know, all the CoH Marathon stuff goes on Pure Boredom now, but this isn't in anyway the plan for the marathon...yet. You see, I have had, a very very stupid idea...

Recently, there have been a lot of places doing 24 hour gaming marathons for charity on various different games that is has made it sort of an everyday thing. And I want the Real World Hero marathon to stand out, there is only one way to do that....

Stream and Play City of Heroes for 48 Hours!

Yes, you read that right, 48 Hours - 2 Days, 2880 Minutes, 172,800 Seconds!

The way I see it is - Anything is possible, but could mine and Ed's body's handle it, could we realistic stay away and play a game for, what would actually be longer than 48 Hours. Could the computer handle City of Heroes (not in Ultra Mode this time), the streaming software and the camera at the same time for 2 days.

Something like this would take a hell of a lot more planning than last year and a hell of a lot more support needed.

But yeah, thought I would post this, if just to get opinions (getting told I'm an idiot lol) - The things I do... lol

Marathon = Bust - Computer = BOOM!

Yeah, So, 5 Hours into the Marathon.... My computer decided it wanted to die, a painful death. The motherboard has officially blown, It couldn't handle what I was throwing at it.

It is a good excuse for a new computer, but I wasn't planning on doing that until next year and its going to set me back around £500 for Motherboard, CPU, Graphics Card and Power Supply, £600 if you include a new HD Monitor.

Admittedly, I don't need a new Graphics Card or Monitor, but I may as well if I'm getting a new set up.

On the marathon side, we recorded a Video Diary of the day, I'll be recording some final thoughts and editing it today, including some parts from the 5 hours we where live. Its not as good as watching us live, but I hope its a good constellation (sp?).

Finally, I would like to thank Eddy for helping out at my end, Mr Wentworth for the support and ideas and everyone who joined us and was looking forward to watching the decent into madness through the 24 hours.

Oh Well.

CoH 24 Hour Charity Task Force Marathon: Update 3 - Plan B

Welcome to Plan B of the City of Heroes Charity Marathon for Real World Hero.

Plan B is as simple as it can get, its just me, attempting to get as high as I can in 24 hours with a brand new character started just for the event. Everything else will stay the same, like it being streamed live and it raising money for Real World Hero.

It is more than likely that Plan B will happen over the Task Force Marathon, but we hope to make it more entertaining on the live stream.

I should have another update on Wednesday when I decided what is happening. Info will be posted on Twitter first.

CoH 24 Hour Charity Task Force Marathon: Update 2

Things are slightly up in the air with the Marathon right now, but for good reason. Everyone's schedule is different, Golden Girl can do Monday/Tuesday, Psygon and Gonk can do a Thursday/Friday before the 18th of December (there going on holiday I think they said) and Eddy [the NPC of the group] works dodgy shifts (even though its part time).

Without Psy, Gonk and GG, I really cant see this happening - I know for a fact they can stay the course, I know there play styles and... I know them, they are epicly good people! There are a couple of other people I know on CoH and who I have met in real life who I want to take part, but not seen them online when I manage to get online.

Now then, those who are good at picking things up will notice that is only 6 people, and your right, but its 7 if your include Phoenix, who has offered her services as a Reserve Member, so, in theory I only need to ask 1 more person and swap some TFs around to when Phoenix will be on - I have a idea who that could be, but I don't know them very well.

Well, to end on a light note - Real World Hero is interested, so will most likely be raising money for there chosen charity and teaming up with them (not in game, there on the US server, unfortunately).

Just need to find a date to accommodate everyone, cant be too hard? Can it?

CoH 24 Hour Charity Task Force Marathon: Update 1.5

Just a small update on the Charity Marathon
  • I'm dropping the 4 Shadow Shard Task Forces
    • It will take 5 Hours plus off of the total time
    • It will help gather 7 people to help (trust me)
    • Should be more interesting viewing on the stream
That's all for this update, said it was small =P

CoH 24 Hour Charity Task Force Marathon: Update 1

Small Update for those who don't follow me on twitter (why don't you follow me on twitter?):
  • Eddy has agreed to help me run the stream throughout the 24 hours, he also has a laptop he got recently, will be using that
  • The date is the 18th of December to the 19th of December.
  • Start and [estimated] finish time is 12pm GMT (Estimated because it depends on how long each TF takes)
Time Conversions: 1pm Euro Time, 7am Eastern Time, 6am Central Time, 5am Pacific Time [I would double check them].
  • Live Stream will be shown on the Pure Boredom site, but I will be contacting people about advertising and showing the stream on there site (Want as much money as possible!).
  • The Live Stream will [hopefully] be showing both the in game footage, and footage of mine and eddy's downward spiral into madness throughout the night.
  • This is just a thought, but if some of the 7 team mates are staying throughout the 24 hours, they could interact through Skype/Teamspeek/Vent to the stream itself.
  • The marathon will take place on the Defiant Server (a Euro Server in case you don't know)
  • Its for Child's Play!!! (A Chip-In page will be set up, all money will go directly to the charity!)
The hard part of this whole thing is convincing 7 others to help, it was easy in 2006 for the Shadow Shard Marathon, but this time I want to do all 18 Hero Side Task Forces. 3 of 4 was hard in 2006, but 18 in 2010 with IOs and the Alpha Slot for the 4 top end ones (Issue 19, not out yet)....

...Its possible, nothing is impossible.

Charity (or, One Stupid Idea)

Confession time, I've never really done anything for charity short of a couple of quid here and there, in fact most of the time I'm thinking "what's in it for me" - Not the best thing to think I know, but, its true.

But, after watching Pat the NES Punk doing a 24 hour marathon of NES games for Child's Play, it got me thinking. I could do that, I could play games for 24 hours and hell, I would do it for a good cause.

Then, after a sleep, I had a chance to think some more about it, and it hit me, like a ton of bricks - I could play City of Heroes for 24 hours, I have done it before back in 2006 on the very first Double XP weekend when I did the Shadow Shard Marathon with 6 other Crazy Heroes (and 1 or 2 others to make up the numbers). But the cogs didn't stop, I got thinking more, what about all the Task Forces in City of Heroes in 24 hours, its possible, ohh but that's not all, I got thinking even more - What if I did all the Task Forces and all the Strike Forces, and the co-op ones, in fact, what about every single Task Force and Strike Force that gives a badge - Thats 24 (25 if you include Old Positron) in total.

Now I know what your thinking, "But that's impossible! You couldn't do 24 Task Forces in 24 hours you crazy Beaver!" and you know what, you are so right, it is impossible, in 24 hours. But its not in 36 to 48 hours.

So this is my challenge, to run all 24(25) Task Forces/Strike Forces in City of Heroes and stream it live online for charity. Call it, making up for lost time and donations.

I must be crazy.
